A seemingly straightforward ranking of James Bond movies based upon cumulative gross receipts to date [1] starts to break down when common sense perspective is introduced.

Following are what must be said when “The Moonraker Threshold” is particularly applied [2].

  • Moonraker rates “better” than every film starring Sean Connery as James Bond.
  • Moonraker rates “better” than every other film starring Roger Moore as James Bond.
  • Moonraker rates “better” than every film starring David Niven, George Lazenby, and Timothy Dalton as James Bond.
  • Moonraker held its position as “best” James Bond movie for sixteen years, until topped by GoldenEye, starring Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, in 1995.

Applied “generically,” The Moonraker Standard further shows the following viz a blunt Gross Receipts metric.

  • The 1967 Casino Royale is significantly “better” than From Russia with Love (1963), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), and Dr No (1962).
  • A View to a Kill (1985) is more than 7% “better” than The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).
  • Never Say Never Again (1983) 8% “better” than Goldfinger (1964).

Based on the foregoing, “Gross Receipts” are not considered valid as a useful measure of absolute or comparative James Bond motion picture quality.
